At an all-India level, the purity was deficient by 3.00 carats. The maximum shortage of purity in a few cities was detected at 9.83 carats. This implies that a piece of gold sold as 24 carats in purity may be only 14.17 carats pure. According to the survey, none of the samples from New Delhi, Kanpur, Pune, Jaipur, Madurai and Chandigarh passed the test. No samples were collected from Mumbai. At present, India has 39 hallmarking centres, including one owned by MMTC in New Delhi. MMTC has plans to open 10 new hallmarking centres across the country.
