New Environmental RegulationsOTTAWA -- Major industries in Canada will have less than three years to prepare for new environmental regulations.
The federal government will introduce legislation in the next few weeks to regulate industrial pollutants.
Environment Minister John Baird says those regulations will take effect in January, 2010.
But Baird says Canada will not attempt to meet the greenhouse gas targets set out in the Kyoto treaty.
Baird warns that trying to reach those targets would force the country into an economic collapse similar to that currently faced by Russia.
The minister made the comments today while appearing before the House of Commons committee studying the government's proposed Clean Air Act.
