RE: Why it's going up?

RE: Why it's going up?There was a good exchange of views on this subject last night. I don't have a copy of the Globe and Mail, but I highly doubt that the article says that Boeing is buying Hughes Electronics. The rumour is that Boeing is buying the satellite manufacturing operating company of Hughes Electronics (Hughes Space and Communications), which is one of four or five operating companies under the Hughes Electronics umbrella. The link between the increase in UBS' share price and this rumour is tenuous at best. Rather than repeat what was said last night, if you're interested you can check out the thread starting with this message: https://www.stockhouse.ca/bullboards/viewmessage.asp?no=744102&t=0&pg=744359&archived=False I just found the WSJ article on another site: "SEATTLE, Jan. 12 — Boeing Co. is near concluding a deal to purchase the satellite manufacturing operations of General Motors Corp.’s Hughes Electronics Corp. unit for about $4 billion, according to people familiar with the discussions. Please folks, let's get the details correct when quoting from the media. SPOKEMEN FOR Hughes and Boeing declined comment. An announcement of a transaction could come Thursday following a scheduled meeting of Boeing’s board. Boeing, based here, is the world’s largest maker of planes and weapons. Hughes, based in Los Angeles, is the largest maker of commercial satellites. For Boeing, the move would greatly accelerate its ability to offer satellite-distributed services on commercial and military aircraft, including broadband-signal access for business travelers who use computers. For Hughes, a sale of its manufacturing operations would enable that company to narrow its focus on service businesses — such as its DirecTV unit, which delivers television to homes via satellite, or its planned Spaceway system for Internet and business services." There's a huge difference between buying Hughes Electronics and buying one of it's operating companies, so let's be careful about understanding what we're hearing in the media so we don't end up posting misleading information.
