(LIP-wb) -- "My momma always said, "Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." Almost everyone knows who said these famous words.
Apparently, consumers worldwide do know and value what they get from Peruvian chocolate, a yummy treat for both children and adults, because demand is increasing on a month to month basis.
Peru's Exporters Association (ADEX) announced that in 2006 an increase of 33% was registered with respect to 2005. Exports totaled US$ 8.925 million compared to US$ 6.701 million in 2005.
Two days before Valentine's Day, ADEX indicated that the main destination are countries in Latin America, mainly Venezuela with imports of US$ 4.376 million, representing 49% of the total.
The second most important destination is Ecuador with purchases of US$ 1.207 million (14%), followed by Colombia (US$ 894k, (10%)) and Bolivia (9%). Other buyers are the United States, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Dominican Republic, Chile, Haiti, Surinam, Puerto Rico, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Italy, Trinidad and Tobago, among others.
Leading Peruvian exporter is by far the company “Good Foods S.A.” with sales valued at US$ 7.361 million, representing 82% of total shipments. This company also provides the domestic market with products such as "olé olé", "Papillón" and "Pícaras".
Another exporter is the Peruvian branch of well-known international company “Nestle” with shipments valued at US$ 844k, or 9% of total exports. Honorable mention: “Machu Picchu Coffee Trading S.A.C.", "Helena SRLtda.", "Molitalia S.A.", "Industrias Alimenticias Cusco S.A." and "Arcor de Perú S.A.".
The months of February (US$ 747k) and November (US$ 1.418 million) were those that registered the highest increase rate with respect to the same months in 2005: 105% and 173%, respectively.

In Peru it is also the first day of school today. Our friend Athos will no doubt be taking his English classes again; someday, he will be understood.
