Xplore receives key patent notification
CDNX-XPL
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Jan. 20 /CNW/ - Xplore Technologies(R) Corp.
(``Xplore''), a rugged Pen Computing innovator, announced today it has been
notified by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (``USPTO'') that an
additional patent application for the Company's GeneSys(R) portable pen-based
computer has been allowed. The approved patent includes Xplore's unique
approach to ruggedization through the use of a removable external bumper
protection system. This innovative ruggedization invention provides a high
level of protection from drops, bumps and vibration, all of which are
characteristic of mobile computing applications. Earlier this year, the
Company announced that 35 claims from its initial patent submission for its
rugged Pen Computing System were approved by the USPTO.
``After testing traditional or standard forms of ruggedization adopted
throughout the industry, it became clear that these schemes were inadequate to
meet the daily challenges of our field computing customers'', stated Brian
Groh, Xplore's President and CEO. ``As a result, a primary design objectives
in forming the GeneSys computing system was to engineer a highly effective
means of ruggedizing the Pen Tablet Computer'', Mr. Groh added.
``This patent approval is evidence the Company has met its objectives to
design a new methodology for protecting and securing mobile computing
technology. An even greater testament is the growing number of customers that
are adopting the GeneSys platform as their mobile computing system of choice
for challenging field-based applications. We believe this form of
ruggedization will have far reaching implications throughout the mobile
computing industry'', Mr. Groh added.
Xplore Technologies(R) is a publicly traded North American company that
designs, manufactures, markets and supports comprehensive ruggedized mobile

office locations in Austin, Texas and Mississauga, Ontario. In recognition of
the overall design, Xplore's GeneSys Mobile Computing System was awarded a
bronze medal in the Industrial Designers Society of America's 1998 Annual IDEA
