The ice link temporarily connecting three producing diamond mines and one under construction with southern suppliers did a booming business this year, carrying a record number of loads. Last year, most of the users failed to truck in much of their fuel and supplies, forcing them to fly in the missing shipments at a considerably higher cost. The final days Warmer weather and longer days triggered the start of the spring melt late in March, and traffic over the 570-kilometre ice road was restricted to nighttime hours for some of the last 10 days. At last report, the official close of the road was to occur the evening of April 7. With continued cool weather, additional shipments could unofficially make the journey for at least a few days more, but there appears to be no pressing need for any late shipments. Over 10,000 truckloads will have made the journey by the time the road closes for good this year. The last detailed tally, issued in the third week of March, showed 9,400 shipments made the northward journey, beating the previous record of 7,981 loads set in 2001. Weather worries were one reason for the big jump in loads. Last year, some of the main users chose to wait for thicker ice to move a fewer number of heavier loads, but the strategy backfired with the premature close of the road in late March. This year, the mines and explorers were willing to send lighter loads up the road in the early days, just in case. Nevertheless, the amount of freight shipped northward also set a record high. The total weight of the supplies delivered by March 19 was 282,000 tonnes, handily surpassing the 257,000 tonnes shipped during the complete 2002 season. The average load in 2002 weighed 33.2 tonnes, about 10 per cent higher than the average of 30.0 tonnes so far this year. All the diamond mines apparently got in a full load of supplies this year. The bulk of the shipments went to the Ekati and Diavik mines, about 370 kilometres up the road from its beginning at Tibbitt, 60 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife. Tahera Diamond Corp. typically has a tougher time getting supplies to the Jericho mine, which is about 30 kilometres beyond Contwoyto Lake. The winter road opens later over the northernmost stretches and it faces more extreme weather during the depths of winter, as blizzards occasionally make the road impassible. Nevertheless, Jericho got its full load of supplies this year, accounting for close to 600 shipments. De Beers Canada Inc. also put the road to good use this year, sending supplies to Snap Lake and Gahcho Kue. Peregrine Diamonds Ltd. was a busy shipper on the exploration side, as it kept three big drill rigs supplied with fuel at DO-27, southeast of Lac de Gras. The three mines and several advanced exploration camps kept up their flurry of shipments, getting fuel tanks and warehouses full to their brims, lest unseasonably warm weather make things difficult at the start of next year. A cold fall got the lake ice off to an early start this year, allowing the road to open on schedule and handle heavier loads than it did for most of the 2006 season. As well, the road maintenance crews tried some new approaches this year, which could help sustain the road through another mild winter. Meanwhile, the latest cool snap is ending. Daytime highs failed to climb above -10 C over the first few days of April and dipped to -25 C at night, but a new mild spell will push temperatures above freezing to start the new week. As a result, the 2007 shipping season will soon end. Tahera closed unchanged at 92 cents Thursday on 900,700 shares. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reader Comments - Comments are open and unmoderated, although libelous remarks may be deleted. Posted by Diamondog @ 2007-04-09 16:53 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wudda ya mean closed? Got a load to take up to Diavik tonight! Guess that's why the sign says 'At your own Risk' after SecureCheck walks away. The 10922 truckloads doesn't count the 500+ backhauls does it? They said over 11,000 total at the office.
