RE: soon

RE: soonthanks obscure: orissaindia.com reveals big long-running squabbles over regional cultural pride and ethnicity, mistrust of govt-ordained development etc that played role in balco losing out in the past. most relevant responses seem to start on page 7, about 1/4 of the way down, with writers satyajit, arjun, mani etc. discussed are fears of destroying the local jungle watershed that collects & distributes rains from the monsoons, of harming abundant wildlife in gandhamarden--we're talking elephants & tigers and more; of extincting rare ayurvedic medicinal plants & the livelihoods of people who harvest them from the forests; of losing nature-oriented tourism; of possible damage by noise, air pollution, toxic run-off; of damage to the beloved temple sanctuaries built by empires of the past; etc. also noted are concerns that locals, who have little, be included in the jobs from this industrialization. and that people who have worked their family homesteads for generations not be displaced, much less without fair and full recompense by the govt. reveals complex issues to be handled with great sensitivity and planning. someone mentions over 230 million-plus tonnes of bauxite. further survey might find more. the sense i get is, the government and industry want this mine. so do many orissans. it will happen, though not without protests which is fine because progress only evolves with communication and consensus. any word on the 85% share approval? or has the deal, apparently involving nalco? moved past that in complexity. blessings to all gotrupees
