RE: TransAlta stock soars on rumours of takeover

RE: TransAlta stock soars on rumours of takeoverTransAlta Shares Gain on Private Equity Speculation FP Trading Desk submits: Shares of TransAlta Corp. (TAC) were up C$1.38 to $26.64 at around 12:20 p.m. ET on Friday as the market appeared to be reacting to merger and acquisition speculation. The stock climbed more than C$2, or 8%, earlier in the day. Desjardins Securities analyst Daniel Shteyn, who said he had no information suggesting there is a bid on the table, said a private equity player would be a more likely candidate than a strategic player to buyout TransAlta given recent transactions in the utility space. He added that this merger and acquisition speculating is warranted given TransAlta's favorable financial position. Joel Thompson, TransAlta's director of communications said the company is not active in any takeover discussions, but suggested some of the speculation may be a result of the company's discount relative to U.S. competitors.
