The way I understand it, the key differentiating aspect of THAI technology is that it burns the bitumen component that would never have been displaced or used otherwise. All the lighter fractions drop out ahead of the fire front, effectively upgrading the oil. Seems simple so I'm not sure if I'm missing something here.
