Stornoway says diamond sample beats expectations
Wed Jun 20, 2007 1:17pm ET162
OTTAWA, June 20 (Reuters) - Stornoway Diamond Corp. (SWY.TO: Quote, Profile , Research) said on Wednesday it has recovered 2,681 carats of diamonds from 1,929 tonnes sampled at its Renard 3 kimberlite in Quebec, results that bettered its expectations.
The largest diamond weighs 10.15 carats, the Vancouver, British Columbia-based company said.
Stornoway and joint venture partner Soquem Inc., a subsidiary of Societe generale de financement du Quebec, want to recover a minimum 6,000 carats of diamonds from three separate kimberlite pipes at the Renard project in northern Quebec.
Renard 3 results, the first completed under the Renard bulk sample program, have a diamond recovery rate of 139 carats per hundred tonnes. The rate from individual samples varied from 78 carats per hundred tonnes to 223 carats per hundred tonnes.

"The final diamond recovery results from Renard 3 have exceeded our expectations," Chief Executive Eira Thomas said in a statement. "We continue to be encouraged by the potential of the Renard project to become Quebec's first diamond mine."
Final diamond recovery at Stornoway's lab is expected to conclude in the third quarter, followed by full market valuation.
Stornoway last year acquired Ashton Mining and Contact Diamond in an effort to create a mid-tier diamond exploration and development company. Its stock rose 6 percent to C$1.06 on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Wednesday.
