RE: Starcomm Value?Starcomm makes modems, and software. I is privately held company based in California. Apparently they may have some software that improves the downloading of digital data on a standard PC.
Granite Communications manufactures handheld computers that hold a minimum of 2 megabytes of data and the option exists for storage of even more data. They are wireless, and as far as I know the only wireless handheld computer on the market that can be used outdoors.
This device has the option of transmitting data over considerable distances, as well it has the option of laser scanning, etc.
There are several other companies that have handheld computers like this one [data collectors] but the are very few with RF capacity that store 2 Megabytes of data. Certainly with GPS and satellite capacity this handheld could become very practical for anyone. The DGPS chip sets are cheap at $65.00 each (t.csy) is the world leader in this area, and has only Trimble competing with it. GPS is geospatial positioning systems. GPS technology is extremely good for saving energy and environmentally associated costs. The only thing that is required on a computer like this is a satellite transponder, and then what you have is full broad band capacity. The issue here is obviously strategic for Global Data in acquiring Starcomm which makes industrial modems as well as sofware.
I don't but if things go well with Global Data they could be a very significant mid-cap company in the near future. If they merged with Communication Systems International and Cygnal Technologies and Valu-net you could see some chins major happenings in the strategic alliances. Some of these companies are going to be merged or bought out, but the best strategic is to merge before, that way management, and ownership do not become diluted.
Chao,
Sorry I did not buy more...
