SEOUL, South Korea -- Samsung Electronics Co. said Monday it has reached a cross-licensing agreement on patents with Sweden's LM Ericsson in wireless communications technology.
The agreement allows the two companies to use each other's patents covering second-generation and third-generation wireless technology, Samsung said in a filing with South Korea's financial regulator.
Samsung, based in Suwon, South Korea, is the world's third-largest producer of mobile phones. Stockholm-based Ericsson is the world's largest wireless network maker.
The companies have agreed in the deal to withdraw all patent-related lawsuits filed against each other, Samsung said in the filing, without elaborating.
Samsung spokeswoman Lee Soo-jeong said the two companies have engaged in patent litigation in the area of 2G and 3G technology. He could not provide any other details, including how many patent lawsuits had been pending.
Samsung said in the filing the two companies had decided not to publicly disclose certain information in the agreement.
In April, Samsung made a cross-licensing deal on patents with software giant Microsoft Corp.
