The basic meaning is that a mining company offsets the cost of production of a primary metal by selling secondary metals retrieved in the process.
The best example I can think of off the top of my head is Xstrata's (ex-Falconbridge's) Nickel Rim property in Sudbury. It will be a nickel mine but the value of the secondary metals (copper, platinum, palladium) is so high that Xstrata's cost of mining the nickel will actually be negative... more than offset by the value of the other metals.
