RE: Stay away from Turkey = BNN now...I think Veronika Hirsch is a quality PM, but she sounded really ignorant talking about ELD today. First of all, the government never shut the mine down, so using the phrase political risk when talking about Turkey is not correct; there are very few jurisdictions in the world that are as mining friendly as Turkey. Unfortunately, when a country abides by the rule of law, people are able to use the court system, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it sucks when these environmental groups are so active. Secondly, bringing up the border skirmish is a silly comment because the Kisladag mine is no where near the Iraqi border; it is at the other side of the country. Finally, she said the Kisladag mine is not a world-class ore body. We know that it has 5 million ounces of reserves at $450 gold price, so obviously at today's gold prices it is alot more. It is Turkey's largest gold mine, so obviously to that economy it is very important. And the cash costs of operating the mine are extremely low which is why it such an attractive take-over target. Is it world-class? That is a relative question, but it is at minimum a very good ore body. She made it sound like it was a dime a dozen; if that was the case, ELD would not have been the best performing gold stock before Kisladag was shut down. The silliest comment of all though was when she suggested that Mongolia was a politically safer jurisdiction than Turkey. That is utter nonsense.
