Government of Canada has decided to help new cell phone entrants break into the market. It will reserve 40 megahertz of spectrum for new entrants to buy. New entrants in Canada are likely to be Videotron, Manitoba Telephones, Shaw cable or other similar outfits. Any new entrant will create additional business opportunities for Glentel. It specializes in Broadband, has ready towers available across length and breadth of Canada with all clearances in place (Land, building, electricity, tower, frequency permit, aviation) and much needed skilled manpower to operate the network 24x7x365. New entrant will take 5-6 years to build it from scratch. Also new carrier will develop more business opportunities for wireless wave stores. Glentel can share these towers under rent /lease agreements since land is not available or very expensive in many cities for new towers. It may be economical to buy/merge with lame duck sitting financially sound Glentel with really valuable manpower and material assets at peanuts share price (market cap only 121 million, revenues 200 million, 14.5 million cash, no debt, proven track record of over 4 decades ). CRTC (Canadian Radio and Telecomm. Commission)is also going to allow foreign companies takeover Canadian companies (Deregulation/ Forbearance rules) to inject much needed capital and new data technology for introducing iphone and increase penetration rates further. It is up to Glentel to best negotiate and take advantage of this win win situation. Stay tuned for “Big changes are ahead for the wireless industry”.
