RE: NEWSIan D. Oliver
Director, IBI Group
“My introduction to the industry was in 1990 with the deployment of the first city-wide fiber backbone for Rogers Cable. As revolutionary as that project was, the technologies and services deployed since then make a city-wide fiber backbone look easy. Through the years, it’s become very clear to me that the industry is only just beginning to exploit its potential to provide services that truly change the way people go about their daily lives. The cable telecommunications industry is taking on more and more responsibility in terms of providing those services in a reliable and useful way. The SCTE is increasingly a vital mechanism for developing the fundamental standards for technology and, more importantly, skill-sets for people. As a member and a chapter leader, I have both experienced and helped deliver the value of the SCTE. As a partner in a large, diverse engineering firm, I have gained insights into a number of industries, each as complex in their own ways as our industry, and from which we can learn a great deal. My wish in serving as a Director-at-Large is to bring the full range of my experience and insight to the efforts of the SCTE so that we take full advantage of all available resources as we continue to grow.”
Ian has over 20 years of experience in the television and broadband industries. He is a partner in IBI Group, a 900 person-strong engineering firm with offices across Canada, in the US and in Europe. Ian leads the firm’s communication systems practice, which since the mid-90’s has served cable operators such as AT&T Broadband (Comcast) and Rogers in North America, and UPC in Europe. Ian has extensive expertise the design and implementation of modern, highly reliable headend buildings and inside plant systems. He has worked across North America, as well in the UK and Asia.
Ian served as the founding Vice-President of the Ontario, Canada chapter and completed his term as President in December 2005. The Ontario chapter has grown to some 600 members in 3 years and serves at the primary forum for the MSOs, vendors, contractors and consultants in the region to meet as members of the industry. Ian has presented numerous papers at SCTE events and conferences in
recent years.
