shorts and real shares-the need to verify?

shorts and real shares-the need to verify? If there is a lot of shorted shares floating in the market, would it not be possible that houses have so much time in which to produce a cover for a short with a real share. Houses have specified clearing times and if shares on the market are only more shorts, that isnt real shares and that isnt real shares in which to cover long standing shorts I figure the market makers invest quite a bit to carpet bomb hoping to pry loose some real shares to cover with, which they can then continue to short. If they cant find the real shares at some point they are forced to having to buy back at whatever the market will bear. Been looking for information in this area and havent quite found it yet, but it does seem interesting. I do think that the mm's do need to see your shares (or real shares) hitting the market periodically to continue with their shorting campaign.
