Algar (SAGD) Project
Algar (SAGD) ProjectRegional Map - SAGD Projects
- Algar is a steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) thermal recovery oil sands project designed to produce 1,600 cubic meters (10,000 barrels) of bitumen per day for approximately 25 years
- It comprises approximately 1,295 hectares (3,200 acres), within seven sections in Township 82, Range 11 W4M and part of two sections in Township 82, Range 12, W4M
- Highway 63 together with pipelines and transmission rights of way run southwest to northeast approximately 3 km west of the Algar project area
- 80 kilometers south of Fort McMurray and 370 km north of Edmonton
- Nearest producing SAGD operations are the company's Pod One and the JACOS Hangingstone facility, situated approximately 30 km to the north. There are other existing and proposed SAGD operations in the area
- Project area lies just inside the northern edge of the caribou protection zone and the land is typical of the region
- Estimates the project area contains up to 32 million cubic meters (203 million barrels) of bitumen reserve and resource which is sufficient to support the designed project life
- Initial estimates are that 15 to 20 SAGD well pairs can produce the maximum design capacity of 1,600 cubic meters of bitumen per day
- The project has a small footprint and will disturb less than 6% of the total project area
- Public consultation, engineering studies and regulatory approval processes are currently underway
- Algar replicates Pod One in design; scope will allow future facility expansion – already financed
- Identified and confirmed reserves by drilling of core holes and 3D seismic analysis performed over the past two years
- Submitted an application to the EUB in June 2007
- Approval anticipated by mid-2008
- Engineering underway
- Target output rate also 10,000 bbl/d of bitumen – start-up end 2009 based on approvals by mid-2008
- Anticipated cost $326 million (excluding capitalized interest and G&A)
- Due to inflationary pressures, ~23% higher than Pod One
- Includes $32 million of contingencies
