(RTTNews) - More than a thousand workers at BHP Billiton's Cerromatoso nickel mine in Columbia went on strike Wednesday night. The workers are demanding higher wages and a special premium tied to rising nickel prices, according to a union spokesman. Workers demanded an 11% pay raise and a premium of 15 million Colombian pesos ($8,100), according to the spokesman. The business produces 55,000 tons of ferronickel annually, comprising approximately 4 percent of the world's nickel. The strike is the second at the mine in the last decade, the previous stoppage resulting in a shutdown of production for four days.
