Connacher, and Several other bigger Co's  are not Mining in the traditional "Tar Sand Sense" of the word...
Their cost to Produce with SAGD is not a # that I have at my fingertips, BUT it does not include MEGA $$$'s
for Crushers, Cokers, Hydro-transport or many other costly items required with Open Pit  Ft. Mac. Operations. 
(Anyone who knows the actual SAGD $$$'s please Post), but it sure as heck can't be directly compared!
Connacher is reclaiming / re-utilizing 90+% of the Ground Waterused -not Potable Water, & it's type of operation does not require the same level of costly remediation (such as suncor announced completion of a phase of the other day).
Therefore it's Footprint on the future & Environment is also going to be much less !
