RE: Site Activity...Pedagogic: A gas kick can occur when the formation pressure is greater than the pressure exerted by the column of drilling mud (hydrostatic pressure + atmospheric pressure). The seriousness of a kick varies with the time and amount of inflow from the formation as it invades the column of mud. With Pascals Law of P1V1/T1=P2V2/T2 even a small 1 m3 at drilling depth a gas kick can turn into an ugly monster on surface. In my Post #22967826 from yesterday, I briefly mentioned the warning signs of a potential problem while drilling and referred to the correct crew action, with that, the affects of a gas kick can be minimized although should never be underestimated.
