sulfur contentcorrect me if im wrong
the sulfur content is a major factor in determining the grade of coal.
when testing coal they need to air dry the sample. exposure to moisture will corrupt the tests.
what im trying to say is that if they had these samples laying around for a long period of time, the moisture from the air got into the coal and decreased the amount of sulfur inside the sample.
