Tide may be turning at Venture exchange
LYNNE OLVER
Friday, June 13,2008
TORONTO—Unsettled globalfinancial markets have hurt trading and financingactivity on Canada'sjunior TSX Venture Exchange so far this year, butthat may be startingto turn around, a bourse executive says.
TheVenture Exchange, owned by TMX Group Inc., is dominated bysmallwestern-based mining and oil and gas companies that exploreforresources around the globe. The exchangerodethe commodities boom last year to a 41 per cent jumpin tradingvolume and a 35 per cent rise in trading value. Financingssurged 45 percent to $11.65-billion. But lastsummer's credit crunch sent many investors elsewhere.<>Tradingvolume on TSX Venture fell 13 per cent in the January to Mayperiod thisyear, compared with the same five-month period a yearearlier. Totalvalue traded has slumped 37 per cent, and financingshave tumbled 48 percent. That contrasts with the picture at theToronto Stock Exchange, wheretrading value and volume were up 19 per cent and 5 percentrespectively to the end of May.
“TheVenture Exchange has been alittle more affectedby the creditcrisis andsomewhat of a move away from junior securities, but with therecent risein energy prices and the strength of metals, it's alsostarting to comeback,” Rik Parkhill, interim co-CEO of TMX Group, toldreporters afterthe company's annual meeting on Wednesday.
Onemarket watcher said he thinks it will besome time before juniorequityfinancings pick up, because the appetite for high-risk stocks isstillmuted.
“I would say there's no way that's going to happen thissummer, part ofit is seasonality, you don't see that stuff doing wellin the summer,”said Paul Thornton, an adviser at Northern Securities.“So the absoluteearliest would be the fall.” TheVenturemarket index took a huge tumble last August, in the earlydays ofthe credit crunch, and investors will need to feel confidentthat creditmarket problems are resolved before they head back intoriskysecurities, Mr. Thornton said. Still, somepockets of the junior resource group are doing well, such as iron oreand coal stocks, he said. “There is action goingon, but investors are really picking their spots within the strongsectors,” Mr. Thornton said.Despite the downturnin trading and financings, new listings onTSXVenture in the first five months of 2008 are running 28 per centabovethe number of new listings in the same 2007 period.KevanCowan, the Calgary, Alberta-based president of TSX VentureExchange, said the junior market is pushing hard in the United Statesto attractnew listings, as is the Toronto Stock Exchange.“A regulated exchange for microcap or emerging companies simply doesn'texist in the United States,” Mr. Cowan said.“Thewhole idea of public venture capital is a concept that'sembracedand utilized in Canada, and it's just something new there.”

THE PIGS PICKS
(POTENTIALLY PORKY PROFITS)
There'sbeen many a piglet come my way in the last few weeks.the pig tries toround up these free range piglets, direct em' into themachine so he canprocess em' and find what's a butt roast and what's achoice chop. thepig thinks he has found a choice chop, similar inscope to the GXS-vearly trading, with a tad (not much more though)more risk.
VST-V Vast Explorationwas a .25center a week or so ago, the pig mentioned it way back in Mayas apotential porker. The pig figured then, with a huge volume spikeandsome on balance volume, Chaikin money flow analysis, and rumours, thatit may make for a bacony trade. Fast forward to Thursday atmarketclose. Blue chip boar, Niko resources, completes theiracquisition of alarge block in Vast. The stock moved to above a dollarand then settledat the buck mark to close the week. While we may havemissed the "buyand hold" easy money, there still smells a greatopportunity here. Thepigs rationale on this one ?? Is if Niko has donetheir DD on thecompany, the area, the risks.....then its probablybetter than anythingthe pig can do to in terms of quality of results. The other rationale ?the pig figures, once this gets the exposure thisweek due to thatdeal, once the presentation on Tuesday morning inCalgary at the oilshow is complete, a whole new crowd will be exposedto it and thenumbers the company says in its presentation (see the Vastweb siteunder "Kurdistan" presentation). Add to this the sheer numberof sharestraded into stronger hands, you may see some nice uplegs thisweek. Theonly caution is the pig sees its come far and fast, don't besurprisedthis week if you see a correction, before a new leg up. Choiceyourentry and exits wisely. This has GXS written all over it.
