ATI and DellDell(TM) takes No. 1 position in worldwide notebook and desktop PC shipments to
medium and large businesses
U.S. Notebook Lead Almost Doubled
ROUND ROCK, TX, March 7 /CNW/ - Dell Computer Corporation (Nasdaq: DELL)
became the worldwide market share leader in both notebook and desktop personal
computer shipments to medium and large businesses in the fourth quarter of
1999, according to market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC).
Notebook PCs
Dell sharply accelerated its notebook PC shipments worldwide to medium
and large businesses, growing 49 per cent year-over-year.
Dell also extended its lead in the U.S. market for notebook sales to
medium and large businesses, growing its market share to 30.3 per cent, nearly
double its closest competitor, according to IDC.
Desktop PCs
Dell also took the lead in worldwide shipments of desktops to medium and
large businesses with 19 per cent market share for the full year of 1999. For
this segment, Dell's desktop shipments increased 40 per cent year-over-year,
more than three times the market rate. Dell also increased market share of
desktops among U.S. medium and large businesses to 31.3 per cent, with
shipments growing 48 per cent for the full year of 1999.
"Dell managed to work through the obstacles facing many PC vendors, such
as memory prices or LCD panel shortages flawlessly and continues to dominate
the corporate sectors," said Bruce Stephen, Vice President, IDC.
"Delivering high quality products and providing a superior customer
experience have propelled Dell to the leading position in notebooks and
desktops," said Joe Marengi, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Dell
Relationship Group. "We're applying that same focus to the server market, in
which we increased our market share from 10 per cent to 15 per cent last year
and currently hold the No. 2 position worldwide."
