heres what I posted in June.....
By the way, Harrington is going to follow the same route as last year in his preparations for defending the Open Championship title he won in Carnoustie.... he is going to play the Irish PGA championship at the European Club in Wicklow (John Ryder's home county) a week before the Open..... He won it last year by barely scraping past a club pro (Brendan McGovern) in a tight playoff...... he then went on to beat the best golfers in the world at Carnoustie......
The European club is one of the best natural links courses in Ireland (and by extension the world) and Harrington likes to tune his links game on tight courses prior to Open tests.... Birkdale this year, is a classic british open test...... fairly open, with the course setup biased toward using the fast undulating greens as the barrier to a low total.....
beats me why US golfers (and nearly every other pro out there) choose to tune up for the Open Championship by playing parkland courses in the US or at the Scottish open in Loch Lomond..... Harrington has made a fool of the European tour scheduler by showing that ANY form of competition on a genuine links course is better than teeing it up with the worlds best golfers on a parkland course, in terms of preparation for the Open.
well done Padraig - tiger would not have lived with you on the back nine yesterday. First European to retain the Open trophy in over 100 years. Great for Irish and European golf...... would love to see Harrington paired against Kenny Perry at the Ryder Cup in Valhalla.... the gallery would go beserk.....
