Mill may reopen soon

ELKO - Yukon-Nevada is not ready to put the shuttered Jerritt Canyon Mine in mothballs just yet.

According to spokeswoman Nicole Sanches, the mill could reopen as soon as early September.

“We intend to restart the mill as soon as we have fixed the fan that malfunctioned,” said Sanches in an e-mail. “There are many checks and systems that need to be triggered for the mill to come back fully online.”

Sanches also said the company is diligently pursuing efforts to pay 400 employees the mine laid off earlier this month.

“We have been talking to quite a few laid off employees and they are very eager to hear back from the company regarding the situation,” she said. “I am doing my best to answer their questions and listen to their concerns. We are keeping a log of everyone that has called and will contact them with any new developments.”

Regarding paychecks that failed to clear the bank, Sanches said, “We are committed to honoring all of the bounced checks and other employee obligations once we have the hold on the bank accounts sorted out.”
