OTTAWA–Manufacturing sales decreased 1.8 per cent in October, bringing constant-dollar sales to their lowest monthly level since December 2001.

Statistics Canada reports the Canada-U.S. exchange rate and falling petroleum and coal prices all factored in the final numbers.

While the sliding dollar boosted sales for manufacturers who determine their prices in U.S. dollars, petroleum and coal prices dropped 13.5 per cent in October, reducing the industry's sales value.

StatsCan says eight of 21 manufacturing industries, accounting for about 40 per cent of total sales, posted decreases.

The sales value of petroleum and coal products declined 7.3 per cent in October, largely due to lower prices – their fourth straight monthly drop.

The transportation equipment industry advanced 2.3 per cent in October, led by aerospace products and parts production with a 23.7 per cent increase.

Seven provinces reported a decrease in manufacturing sales in October, while only New Brunswick, Quebec, and British Columbia reported gains.

Manufacturing sales in Alberta fell 6.8% in October, erasing all the gains registered since May 2008.
