Windsor on deck for telecom operation

WINDSOR, Ont. — Globalive Communication Corp., a Toronto-based telecommunications company, will open a facility in Windsor in early 2009, bringing more than 100 jobs to the community, The Windsor Star has learned.

Globalive representatives and the Windsor-Essex Development Commission will announce details of the operation at a news conference Monday. A source said Sunday it is the first time Globalive, a 10-year-old corporation, looked to Windsor as part of its expansion strategy. It was not known Sunday what kind of services Globalive will provide from its new Windsor operation, or where it will be located.

Globalive, founded in 1998 by its CEO, Anthony Lacavera, offers a variety of telecommunication services, from long distance telephone plans to high speed Internet and, most recently, mobile phone service.

In early September, Globalive announced it will begin offering cellphone service in the first half of 2009, targeting 1.5 million customers by 2011. The company’s long-term target of 3.5 million customers will focus on prepaid, inexpensive cellphone plans, it was announced.

Globalive will compete with Canada’s three well-established cellphone service providers, Rogers Communications Inc., BCE Inc. and Telus Corp.

Globalive also offers voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) services, which allows people to make phone calls through an Internet connection.

According to the company’s website, the Globalive group of companies include Yak Communications, OneConnect Services and Canopco, among others.

Over the years, Globalive has received a number of business and industry awards and accolades, including the number one spot on the list of Canada’s 100 fastest growing companies in 2004 and recognition as one of Canada’s best managed companies in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
