RE: Trading in Canadayes you are correct, Canadians can buy US stocks (and short the hell out of pennies too) but as a US resident you cannot buy a Canadian stock most of the time.. It is probably because they tax so heavily and do not want to give anything away.
However Etrade and I hear Ameritrade now do venture and TSX stocks so I would suggest looking into them, also there is Penntrade, or you can go to a full service broker that has connections and a license in the state you live and they will help you.
Personally I buy the US version, but I do not day trade or swing trade them so even if the liquidity is low they still move my shares within a few hours. Even as a Canadian citizen I cannot trade with a Canadian account while I live in the US..... go figure..
