with TD it's free if you maintain a min. balance, which includes all accts. for your household, eg. cash, rif, rrsp etc. the total can include accts. for all people registered to your address, eg. wife, mother bro. kids etc.

you should call around as banks and any inst. offering self administered accts. may be more flexible now that business isn't as good as it was. they may waive some rules for a new acct.
