Interesting point. The one time I was in Indonesia, I found myself at the losing end of every commercial transaction I engaged in. I was fleeced by money changers, taxi drivers, grocers, a travel agent, and a 6 year old selling t-shirts. Yes, I was out-foxed by Indonesian 6 year-old kid. Kind of jives with Tranparency International's take on the degree of corruption there. I wouldn't go there expecting to be honored and respected, though I'm not suggesting it could never happen. To be pragmatic, I would go there expecting to be separated from my cash. There is a cost of doing business there, for sure, according to the ex-pat business types I met.
