Religion, ideology, and cultural differences can all transcend whatever economic/political model in place at any one time.
Unequivacal co-operation in the utopian sense would require the abandonment of principles and mores. Personally, I think principles and the concept of right and wrong are inherent beahviours for humans - which has the potential to make co-operating, instead of competing, a challenge on pretty much any scale.
