Arbitration deadlines

Arbitration deadlinesFirst of all, I have no specific knowledge about how things work in the great province of Newfoundland and Labrador nor do I any specific knowledge about the members of this particular board but since we're just killing time I have a few thoughts.

Other arbitration/mediation/adjudication boards that I been familiar with have been typically composed of persons who work almost on a contract basis.  By this I mean that they have been remunerated according to how many days they "sit" and have been paid per diems the same way; 10 days to reach a decision equals 10 days of pay and 10 days of per diems etc, etc.  I have seen some boards that are composed of permanent members but they are still credited with extra pay/expenses according to the number of days it takes to reach a conclusion.  This kind of makes sense since if you want to get a complete and thorough judgement/decision you need to "encourage" the effort.  If this is the setup for "our" board I can safely guess that the decision will come in mid to late August.

Now, if this particular board is comprised of regular salaried government employees you might feel that they would want to get this thing cleaned up before summer so that there is no reason to be coming into the office when they could be out enjoying the sun but the flip side is that once this item clears the desk something else is probably waiting - might be better to drag this one out rather than having to start something new.  My point is that you just can't accurately predict what is going on behind the scenes.  You could argue that the board members will want to take vacation in the summer and this will affect the time for the final decision either that it will come out early or be delayed until the end but I know a surprising number of people who would rather work in the summer and take vaction in the winter to allow for travel south (especially if the kids are out of the house).  So who knows what's going on?  Personally, I feel that since we haven't seen it by now (out in the first two weeks) that it will be out near the end - my prediction is mid-August.  Enough time to thoroughly cross the "t"s and dot the "i"s but still early enough to allow for unforseen issues.
