Canada's Armed ForcesIf you go back in history (WWII) you will see that all of Canada's overseas military were volunteers....conscripts stayed in Canada. Just look at the numbers of Canadians that landed at Normandy on D-Day compared to the Brits and the Yanks. We were right up with them in numbers. Most pictures you see in the landing on that June morning were taken by Canadian film crews, where the Canadians main landings was in front of the casino....they then had to proceed past the seawall, and into the town, clear it and make the deepest penetration of all the allied forces on the the first day.
If you want to read some exciting history books...There are a series written by military historians which mentions the contributions of all the regiments as they landed and proceeded through the French country side. into Belgium, then into to Holland and into Germany. You would be quite surprised what are volunteer forces did on the land in Europe
The airforce were exceptional....and the navy was made up mainly of farm boys did a fantastic job ....not only in the western approaches of the Atlantic....but in the landings in Normandy.
So if you don't have anything exciting to do at the cottage....pick up some of these books from the library and do some good reading ....and learn what our fathers, or grandfathers did to make us proud ........Richard sgt. (ret)
