just to add to Yemens note on drilling at depth.

you have to remember 1700m is 1.7 km, its alot of pipe.

I dont know the drilling rates on oil rigs but on a diamond hole, in good ground a good driller can get 100m at the top of the hole in a 12 hour shift, but down at 1000m, 30m is a good shift.
