La empresa minera Iamgold ejecuta proyectos en las comunidades cercanas al área de la concesión minera, de Quimsacocha, que se encuentra a 3.600 metros sobre el nivel del mar.

María Gualpa, vicepresidenta de la comuna de Chumblin Sombrerera, afirmó que su pueblo recibe ayuda de la empresa minera como asesoramiento para incrementar la producción ganadera. Iamgold y la comuna, perteneciente a la parroquia Chumblin, del cantón San Fernando, firman cada seis meses convenios con el fin de mejorar la situación económica del poblado.
Vicente Jaramillo, coordinador general de Responsabilidad Ambiental de Quimsacocha, afirmó que, a pesar de que sus actividades están suspendidas por el Mandato Minero, la empresa continúa con sus programas de cuidado ambiental en la zona del yacimiento aurífero.
También cerca de 40 pobladores de las parroquias San Gerardo, Chumblin, Victoria de Portete, entre otras, reciben becas para estudiar en SECAP en electricidad y soldadura. El objetivo es que ellos puedan acceder a puestos mejor remunerados, cuando la empresa reanude sus actividades mineras.
Monitoreo
A pesar de que se encuentran paralizadas sus actividades, la empresa continúa con sus proyectos de cuidado ambiental. Al momento hay 10 puntos de monitoreo a cargo del Ministerio de Ambiente. La mayoría están ubicados en la cuenca del río Irquis, desde el yacimiento hasta el sector de Zhucay.
En el área de concesión, las universidades del Azuay y de Cuenca mantienen su proyecto Promas, con el que estudian sobre los niveles de humedad y de agua en el páramo.
Etapa
El yacimiento de Quimsacocha se encuentra en la fase de exploración avanzada. Esto consiste en desarrollar un programa de perforaciones en el suelo con profundidades de entre 150 y 250 metros y un ancho de entre cuatro y ocho centímetros.
Luego de esta fase y de la aprobación del estudio de factibilidad, la empresa iniciaría con la explotación y producción del oro.
Jaramillo señaló que en el yacimiento se extraerá el mineral. En el campamento Pinos se construirá una planta de concentración, en donde se hará un tratamiento de los minerales explotados.
Luego se llevará ese mineral a una planta de fundición y de refinamiento, que se construirá posiblemente en Posorja, Guayas. Al final se comercializará.
Concesión
La empresa minera tiene 8.280 hectáreas concesionadas. De esa área, el proyecto minero se ejecutará en 200 hectáreas.
