Canada pushes for Chinese investmentAugust 10, 2009
.Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said he'll encourage Chinese state-run entities such as China Investment to list shares in Canada or buy stakes in publicly traded companies as the easiest way to avoid investment restrictions against government-run entities.
Speaking in a Bloomberg interview, Flaherty said he will assure Chinese authorities that their investment is welcome in the energy-rich country, as long as its done on a commercial basis. Flaherty is due to meet Tuesday in Beijing with Lou Jiwei, chairman of CIC, the country's $200 billion sovereign wealth fund.
"Generally speaking, we would like to see large investments governed by the public-trading rules, Flaherty said ahead of a six-day visit to Beijing and Shanghai. While listing publicly is not the only route, it is the simplest," Flaherty said.
