NDEP, Queenstake still working on mill restart

Published: Tuesday, September 15, 2009 1:20 PM CDT
STATELINE — The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection is still working with Yukon-Nevada Gold subsidiary Queenstake Resources on restarting the mill at the Jerritt Canyon Mine north of Elko.

“We had meetings even this week,” NDEP Administrator Leo Drozdoff told the Nevada Mining Association at the association convention in Stateline Saturday.

NDEP’s Bureau of Mining Regulation and Reclamation Chief David Gaskin said the agency and Queenstake are working on a consent degree that goes beyond required mercury air emission controls.

He said the degree covers all aspects of environmental issues at Jerritt Canyon, which Yukon-Nevada shut down in August 2008, laying off 400 people.

NDEP gave the company temporary permission in the spring to restart the mill with the provision that it install new mercury controls by May 30, but the company missed the deadline.

NDEP then ordered the mill shut down again, and the agency and Queenstake have been working on the new consent degree since the company installed the new equipment a few weeks after the deadline.

Yukon-Nevada has gold ore stockpiles at Jerritt Canyon that it hopes to process to bring in revenue for the Canadian company and help it pay back bills and obligations. — By Adella Harding
