Cymat - Esprit de Corps ArticleNice plug for Cymat by Scott Taylor (Esprit de Corps) current issue (Sept 2009) article " The next generation of armoured vehicles: $5.2 billion in new armoured vehicles will prepare the Canadian Forces for future conflicts".
Article mentions that Cymat was profiled in the Canadian Military magazine in Vol 16 Issue 3, which I have not yet been able to view. I have an excerpt of Scott Taylor's article below pertaining to Cymat, followed by the link:
As profiled in Volume 16 Issue 3, a Mississauga, Ontario-based company seems to have found a revolutionary solution to this problem. Cymat Technologies Ltd. produces an aluminium foam that essentially incorporates air bubbles into a sheet of aluminium, creating a substance that resembles the weight and texture of a Rice Krispy square. The amazing characteristic about aluminium foam is that, when hit by a blast, it condenses into itself thereby absorbing the shock wave. Imagine crushing a pop can under a booted heel on a sidewalk.
The extreme light weight of this substance relative to its protective qualities has drawn a considerable interest from both the Pentagon and the Canadian Defence Department. In response to the Cymat profile, Philip Twardawa, a DND scientist deployed to Kandahar, wrote: "Since it is virtually impossible to locate and destroy all IEDs that have been employed, a significant effort is likewise directed at improving survivability of vehicle occupants in the event of an IED threat." Twardawa also acknowledged that Cymat foam is well known at the Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) research lab in Valcartier, Quebec.
