Congo to build potash plant

Congolese Head of State, Denis Sassou Nguesso, Thur sday laid thefoundation stone of a plant that will produce potash in Mengo, 25kilometres north of Pointe Noire, in Southern Congo,

The plant is owned by the Mag Minerals Potasse Congo (MPC) company, a subsidiary of the Canadian Mag Industries group.

"Thisplant will place Congo as a leading producer of African potash andamong the 13 largest producers of potash in the world," said ExecutiveVice-president and Director of MPC, Stephane Rigni, during the launchceremony which was attended by Canadian Ambassador to Congo, Ms. SigridJohnson.

"The construction of the plant will last 36 months andwhen completed its expected annual production will be 1,200,000 tonnes,noted Rigni.

The project which will cost US$ 1 billion, willprovide employment for employment for 4,000 Congolese, 2,000 of whomare already operating in the field.
