I work in the industry, and it seems strange that the geologists weren't looking at the core as it was drilled. This is an important part of exploratory drilling that is used to determine the end of hole depth, and modification of subsequent drill hole locations. Stopping a drill hole in mineralization without delineating its extent is not good.
However, maybe they just wanted to get the drilling done asap before bad weather without the geologists slowing them down. I'm sure there are other possible reasons as well.
