Missouri Cobalt

Missouri CobaltAccording to my l962 US Bureau of Mines Circular 8103, A Materials Survey of Cobalt, Missouri has produced cobalt since the 1850's. Past production from both Idaho and Missouri in the l950's and 60's were under government contract. Missouri was the second largest cobalt producer next to Idaho. US Cobalts' Information Circular lists an indicated resource of 5.6 million tons at a 0.05% cobalt cutoff grading 0.27% cobalt, 0.43% nickel and 0.5% copper in fourteen ore zones. This is based on over 400 core holes. A later (l986) measured and indicated resource in 5 ore zones is shown at 698,000 tons grading 0.66% cobalt and 0.99% nickel using a 0.35% cobalt cutoff. This work was done by Falconbridge so I doubt if anyone is making it up. A qualifying report was done for the CDNX by B.J. Price Geological Consultants and Ross Glanville and Associates from Vancouver. There has been some difficulty in permitting exploration programs in the state on National Forest land in the last few years. This property is all private, so only a Missouri permit will be needed to start mining. The IC states that the historic mine impacts are being corrected by the past two owner/operators. Not much different from the Idaho properties except FCO will have to go through the Federal NEPA process (see Battle Mountain's Crown Jewel situation in Washington state) IMO having other metals with good cobalt grades is a good thing. Nickel is flying high. This site is easily to get to with paved roads, and is located in a good mining state. The company has what appears to be an excellent group of managers with experience finding, building, and operating mines. Some folks on the FCO site seem to have a problem with another possible cobalt producer in the US. I still think it is good for both. I look forward to hearing more about USC. I haven't seen a schedule or production estimates yet. Good luck to cobalt producers in the US!! It is an important metal.
