I'm sure if they were wrongly convicted of something, they would be more than happy to have an opportunity to appeal. That's the Canadian system. Why it would be an abuse of the system is beyond me. And what good is sending letters to the politicians. Would you want them to deny people the right to appeal? That would put Canada in the same league as North Korea, Iran and China. But they do have efficient legal systems. You have to give them that. You go before a judge on a trumped up charge, get convicted in two hours and off to the labor camp. No appeals. No lengthy delays. All good, right?
