Bombardier Inc. said Hungary has placed an order worth $112 million US for 25 trains as it seeks to boost energy efficiency and replace old locomotives at the state-run railway.
MAV-Trakcio, the Hungarian State Railway Company, will take delivery of the first Bombardier Traxxx P 160 trains in spring 2011, Bombardier’s transportation unit said in a statement. The contract includes an option for a further 25 locomotives, it said.
“The new locomotives will contribute to the modernization and energy effectiveness of the Hungarian railways,” said Imre Markus, chief executive of Mav-Trakcio.
“They will enable Mav-Trakcio to reduce maintenance costs and continue to fulfill more contractual obligations for international corridors.”
The trains are intended for passenger service in Hungary and for cross-border transport to Germany and Austria.
The Traxx products are designed for the transport of goods as well as passengers in national and international routes on all networks, Bombardier said.
The final assembly of the trains will take place at Bombardier’s plant in Kassel, Germany.
Bombardier’s transportation unit is headquartered in Berlin, Germany and has a presence in over 60 countries. It has an installed base of over 100,000 vehicles worldwide. Bombardier Inc. is headquartered in Montreal.
