RE: Long Like the Wolf
RE: Long Like the Wolf Agree with all of your post and am more or less in the same position. Regarding SAGD vs tar sands mining, every time I read something about the bogeyman of the tar or oil sands or even worse see pictures of the open pit mining, I can't help but think that the environmentalists have a real good selling point helping them to get across maximum negativity to the general public and government both in Canada and the US, our biggest customer. The next thought is why aren't SAGD developers and producers pointing out the the obvious differences and minimal environmental footprint of SAGD ? I t would be so easy to do and would get that part of the general public now against the oil sands either totally onside, or at least educated about SAGD and be more amenable to the idea that oil sands development is not all bad. And as public opinion goes so goes the government, especially when the subject is energy and fuel costs and availability. I think part of the reason is similar to the excuse a Hyundai company official gave today on TV when asked by a reporter about Toyota. He refused right off the bat, saying it was against company policy too comment about a competitor. That is why I think SAGD companies like CLL won't highlight the obvious enviromental benefits of their process, they're all in the same club. If they did take that step however and promote the environmental benefits of SAGD they would give the enviromental groups an out and another option. Those groups know that they will never stop tar or oil sands mining in it's entirety but they will keep fighting and trying to impede development. But as I've observed in a number of other situations involving conventional mining companies, they will,if their backs are against the wall and in an attempt to at least gain a partial win, accept the least enviromentally damaging alternative. SAGD gives them an excellent option in that regard and they may be receptive to promoting it in place of the worser 'evil' of open pit mining if push comes to shove. Who knows, but in any case I do think it's absolutely incumbent upon companies like CLL to point out the differences in the processes and the minimal environmental impact as part of their duties of maximizing shareholder value. To do this they have to get the message out and we all know they aren't. JMO
