I think that spinning out both their gold assets would be complicated from a legal perspective, they'd have to accurately identify the relative contribution of assets from both companies into the new one.
Or they could create two new gold companies, and merge them at some point, or sell both to a JV partner, who knows, either way it's a huge win for existing shareholders, the sum of the separate companies will invariably be worth more than the combined assets. If you like just the gold, or just the diamonds or the base metals, investors will have greater flexibility, and new investors will be drawn to the IPO's.
Buying DDN and UNR at the current price levels is a no-brainer!
