Newfy (
Newfoundlander)term for the unique dialect of
English they speak. Among the younger
generation of Newfies, this dialect isn't actuallyused (although their accent is unique to
Newfoundland also), but the older
fisherfolk of the island still go back and forth in this amusing, ifalmost
incomprehensibledialect. It has
links to
17th century English style, and I have a friendwho swears she has heard people using
phrases that's she's only heard elsewhere in
Shakespeare. Newfoundland has its own large volumewhich describes in detail words, phrases and constructions native toNewfoundland, which most schools there have somewhere in their
library. (By the way, they pronounce theirprovince "Newf'ndland" and don't like it when people say
"New found land" ;)
