I cannot imagine the office making these very positive statements over the phone to retail shareholders without having the numbers to back up their words. More than one individual has called and been informed of a step out.
We really do not have too many shares out so this could go up faster  than people realize. The shear volume of shares traded tend to how you say, put a person to sleep or in a comfort zone thinking that there will always be shares there for the taking. Once in that zone one misses when the volume dries up and the shares become expensive and more difficult to acquire.  Yes the step out will negate shorting on news. I think the pressure would be too much.
All conjecture. As you say, we see the writing.
