BYD expects China car sales to grow 20% in 2010

Published: 23 Apr 2010 01:16:15 PST

Apr. 23, 2010 (China Knowledge) - BYD Co<1211>, China's largest rechargeable battery maker and a well-known automobile producer, estimates that car sales in China will increase about 20% this year because the Chinese government's stimulus policies to boost domestic consumption will remain in effect, Reuters reported.

Henry Li, general manager of the export division for BYD, said yesterday that the country's smaller cities will likely help drive sales growth, which is expected to continue over the next five years.

Shenzhen-based BYD earlier said its net profit was RMB 3.79 billion in 2009, up 270% year on year thanks to the robust growth of its automobile business.

The auto maker sold more than 450,000 cars last year. It aims to sell 800,000 units this year, China Knowledge reported earlier.

The eighth-largest auto maker in China earlier said it would set up its U.S. headquarters this year.
