When they do seismic they drill a number of holes in a straight line a set distance apart and pack those holes with explosives, then they set a string of seismic recorders out between these holes. They then set off the explosives and the concusion of that explosion deflecting off the underground structures and bouncing back up to the recorders creates a picture of what's under there. They also have a machine that has a big metal plate the "thumps" the ground and creates the same sound wave. Not quite as effective as the drilling but cheaper.
